October 27, 2009album review for the week of October 27th - November 3rd, 2009
This Week: Cruelty and the Beast - Cradle of Filth 1.'Once Upon Atrocity' -Has orgasm written all over it.
2. “Thirteen Autumns and a Widow' - love the beginning music -vocals not very clear but still have that edge of your seat feeling. -tempos great.
3.'Cruelty Brought Thee Orchid' -spoken female vocals in the beginning? win. -i love how it switches back and forth between really deep and really shrilly(if thats even a word). -pretty freaking long. not quite sure how i feel about that.
4. 'Beneath the Howling Stars' -honestly dont like the beginning to much. i think it could@ be better. -vocals are a bit clearer, so thats a plus.
5. “Venus in Fear” -Love the beginning, but it kinda getting very expected. -screaming in pain mixed with orgasm screams? Sounds kinda sexy if you ask me.
6. “Desire in Violent Overture” -Oh my. I can actually understand some of what they’re saying. -Spoken female vocals starting to get annoying.
7. “The Twisted Nails of Faith.” -beginning sounds like something youd hear in like, a brother’s grimm version of the itsy bitsy spider.
8. “Bathory Aria” -opera in the beginning? I like it. -like how it goes from a whisper in the beginning to almost like a recording of an old record. Like you’d hear in a movie or some shit.
9. “Portrait of the Dead Countess” -sounds a bit softer, but it’s a good break from the horror movie-esque shit that litters the rest of the album.
10. “Lustmord and Wargasm” -would a wargasm be what happens when you orgasm because of violence? Just asking. -Not bad, not all that great, but its not bad.
Overall, it was good, but it got old and boring REALLY quickly. I think it would’ve been better had they changed up the sound rather than used the same basic sound redundantly(correct terminology? Maybe? Quite possible?).

I do think certain songs could be better, but nothing’s perfect. It’s a lot better than their first album[or was it an EP?]

October 13, 2009album review for the week of October 13th - 19th, 2009hey guys. i know that ive been posting an album review everyweek since the first week of sept., but things have been really hard for me this week. school's been fine, but last night i had to save a former best friend's ass...again. i stayed up until around midnight typing a copy of a script needed for theatre that she was supposed to do over the weekend. of course, she would rather hang out with one of her friends than do work for school. people like that really piss me off. its like, if it just involved you, thats one thing, but when other people are relying on you to do something that will also affect their grade, thats just disgusting. also, when i told her this, she said about me being her mother. i was pissed. xo ps.

October 6, 2009Album Review for the week of October 6th - October 12th, 2009
This week: “Black Metal” – Venom [Note: this would be the deluxe extended edition. so, i got the bestie to write some of it. what i write is in black, what he wrote will be in red:D] 1. “Black Metal” -Beginning honestly has that nails on a chalk board effect on me. For serious. -In parts, it sounds like the vocalist is fucking drunk(mostly in the “black metal!” parts) -I’m not really that fond of how the vocals fade in in the beginning. -I really like how the drums are so basic, but the guitar/bass(I can never tell which is which) is so, complex? Im not positive if that’s the correct terminology, but it sounds right. 2. “To Hell and Back” -Music is so simple, its amazing. -lyrics are great and they’re really justified by the vocals. 3. “Buried Alive” -THIS SONG GIVE ME THE GOD DAMN CREEPS EVERYTIME I HEAR IT. Was that worth caps? Absolutely. -Creepy, but amazing. The lyrics paint the picture so well. The music itself could be a little better though. I think the drums over-powered the guitar/bass. 4. “Raise the Dead” -matches so well with previous song. -vocals are great, but were over-powered by the music. -lyrics were amazing, but not creepy. 5. “Teacher’s Pet” -quite possibly one of the dirtiest songs ive EVER heard…but god damn do I love it. -music is great, vocals are great, the lyrics got me fucking hard. 6. “Leave Me In Hell” -Not one of my favorites, but its not bad. -the music is good, the vocals are good, but im not quite sure what the hell theyre talking about. 7. “Sacrifice” -love the guitar in the beginning -lyrics are very, how do I say this, to the point? -vocals are great, music’s great. 8. “Heaven’s on Fire” -not one of my favorites, but still a great song. -vocals are great, music’s okay, lyrics are okay, but everything could be a little better. 9. “Countess Bathory” -love the beginning -love the lyrics and the picture it paints. -vocals are amazing and the tempo is just right for this song 10. “Don’t Burn the Witch” -music is good, lyrics are okay, tempo could be a little faster, vocals are great. 11. "At War With Satan"[Preview] -im not sure if i would consider most of this a song as much as i would a story put to background sounds, but definately enjoyable. no singing actually takes place until 2:03 and even then it only lasts for about...17 seconds? Overall, I thought that this album was very enjoyable, give or take a couple of songs.
The Bonus Tracks. 12. “Bursting Out” [60 Min+ Version] – It’s fast. That’s what you describe this song as. They do an amazing job on the beat, Cronos sings as fast as he can. And best of all, it’s short and to the point, and never too serious. This one time I’m not against Cronos singing all those ridiculous things, his interjections. They add to the song here. B+ 13. “Black Metal” [Radio 1 Session] – There isn’t much difference between this and the album version. Cronos sings in a different voice, and it’s good, actually. Add in a few of the things he does, speaking “Welcome to Hell!” at the end, and this is what you get. If any song were to be better than the original Black Metal, this is a strong contender. A+ 14. “Nightmare” [Radio 1 Session] – A Venom song that’s slower. Amazing! They did a pretty good job; it’s just the right tempo to be effective. The music matches the slower vocals. But it just feels a little odd from Venom. Not a bad song overall, but there’s something missing. A few good passages redeem this song, greatly. And the lyrics are grisly, but the gore doesn’t translate well.C+ 15. “Too Loud for the Crowd” [Radio 1 Session] – Then they pick right back up where they should never have stopped. This is what Venom does best. They blast your ears full of fast and hard metal. Its speed is its best attribute, and one that stands out, if only because Cronos proclaims they are just “Too loud for the crowd, too loud for the radio.” B+ 16. “Bloodlust” [Radio 1 Session] – This song is solid, but nothing exceptional. The music is good, it’s fast, the Vocals match, but it’s nothing really spectacular. After hearing Cronos yell “Move it!” a million times, it gets a little ridiculous. Again, lyrics are fairly good, but again, it doesn’t quite translate. C 17. “Die Hard” [12” Version] – This song, however, is what Venom is all about. It starts out, “Satan, father” Abaddon and Mantas obliterate their instruments as Cronos sings, or rather, growls, about the demons growing strong. It’s a shining example of how everything clicked. When he growls the chorus, it’s just unbelievable. It never gets old, this song will never wear your nerves down. It can only get better. A 18. “Acid Queen” [12” Version] – If this was your first Venom song, woe unto you. It’s a nasty habit Venom has. In addition to the unrelenting Satanic theme, there tend to be overtly sexual and drug songs mixed in. This one is unfortunate, in that, it’s both! The music is average, the vocals though, fall short, and hard. When he isn’t groaning and moaning, Cronos tries to sing. He tries to inject something human into his voice, but succeeds only in failing to do so. You can never listen to this song and be well off. D- 19. “Bursting Out” [12” Version] – It’s very similar to the first Bursting Out. There honestly aren’t many differences, if there are any noticeable ones in general. But, because it’s Bursting Out, it’s a great song. You can’t go wrong with this one, not at all. B+ 20. “Hounds of Hell” [Outtake] – Another average Venom song. If you’re thinking this song sounds like a throwaway, you’re probably right. The only redeemable quality to it is the job Abaddon does on the drums. He kills. But the song just doesn’t live up to Venom. C Overall: B. The bonus tracks are definitely worth listening to. Some won’t stand out, one can safely be skipped. If you liked Black Metal, these definitely are right up your alley too, and you’re doing yourself a disservice not listening to them.
[yes, i feel very intimidated by his part] -xo

September 29, 2009Album Review for the week of September 29th - October 5th, 2009This Week:
“19” – Adele
1. “Daydreams” -Too high pitch in parts, but the lyrics are good, the music is very simple, but not stupid simple. It tells a story, but its not one of those story-songs that make you want to go read Shakespeare.
2. “Best for Last” -Love the music. Love the vocals. Love the lyrics. Unfortunately, they don’t go well together.
3. “Chasing Pavements” -Amazing. One of my favorite songs of all times. Touching lyrics. Beautiful vocals. Amazing music.
4. “Cold Shoulder” -Don’t like the music. Lyrics are okay, but not the greatest in the world.
5. “Crazy for You” -Really good song. Great lyrics, great music, but not one that strikes me as one that I would listen to very often.
6. “Melt My Heart to Stone” -I think she strained her voice a little much for certain parts of this song, but the rest of the time its good. Music is good, but the lyrics are confusing. What exactly is she talking about? Maybe the lyrics are supposed to match the title.
7. “First Love” - Beginning music sounds like it came from a jewelry box and it overpowers the beautiful vocals. Lyrics are pretty, but not amazing.
8. “Right as Rain” -Reminds me of Duffy. I don’t quite get the whole “who wants to be right as rain?” thing though. Other than that, I really like that lyrics and the music and the vocals.
9. “Make You Feel My Love” - Vocals are beautiful. Lyrics are amazing. Music is beautiful. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this song.
10. “My Same” -Okay, was the snapping really necessary? It made the music that much worse. For serious. The music was bad and it took away from the amazing vocals.
11. “Tired” -Vocals are bad, but the musics good. Lyrics are kinda confusing though.
12. “Hometown Glory” -Beautiful song. Beautiful vocals. Beautiful music. Confusing lyrics.
Overall, I love this album. It has its ups and its downs, but it’s a really good album and I suggest this album to everyone.

September 22, 2009Album Review for the Week of September 22-28, 2009This Week: “All I Ever Wanted” – Kelly Clarkson
1. “My Life Would Suck Without You” -Music and lyrics mesh well together and with vocals. The song itself is very simple, but it doesn’t border nonsense.
2. “I Do NOT Hook Up” -Great song, great music, great vocals, but the lyrics are a bit confusing. The verses sound like she’s trying to hook up, but the bridges and chorus sound like shes saying she wont.
3. “Cry” -Its one of those songs, that’s just so depressing that it makes you a little depressed or upset to say the least. Everything from the music to the vocals to the lyrics is depressing, but it’s in a good way.
4. “Don’t Let Me Stop You” -Absolutely amazing. Everything about this song is great. From the music to the lyrics to the vocals. Also the fact that its one of those songs that everyone can relate to, even if they don’t know why.
5. “All I Ever Wanted” -Definitely a break-up song. I personally love the lyrics, love the vocals, but I don’t love the music too much.
6. “Already Gone” -Beautiful, sad song with amazing vocals, amazing music, and amazing lyrics. This is definitely a song for that couple that love and respect each other, but just cant make a relationship work.
7. “If I Can’t Have You” -Three words can describe this song: Obsessive Ex-Girlfriend’s Anthem. For serious. Unless you are that girl that’s driving cross-country in an adult diaper with intentions of killing your lover’s girlfriend, you PROBABLY wont like this song. Will you definitely not, no. but you probably wont. I really don’t like the music or the lyrics but the vocals are to die for.
8. “Save You” -Very beautiful song with simple lyrics and simple music…until the end.
9. “Whyyawannabringmedown” -This song made my ears bleed. Horrible music, horrible vocals, horrible tempo, but the lyrics were tolerable.
10. “Long Shot” -Yes, this is the same song that Katy Perry did. The only difference is, everything but the lyrics. I love the music, especially the beginning, I love the vocals, I love the lyrics and the tempo. I love everything about this song.
11. “Impossible” -The beginning sounds like video game music. I’m not a fan of this song at all. I don’t like the music or the lyrics, but its not atrocious.
12. “Ready” -Very…boring. Didn’t like the music or the lyrics and the vocals during the chorus sounds like freaking carrie underwood.
13. “I Want You” -Has commercial jingle written all over it. Either that, or it would be in a movie that takes place in the 50’s where the teens are dancing in a diner or some shit. Not a great song. There’s a fine line between simple and stupid. This crossed the line into stupid about 3 miles ago.
14. “If No One Will Listen” -Very warm. Very well written. Not very well sung.
Overall, this album was okay. Some songs were absolutely amazing and I wouldn’t change a single thing about them. But others should have never been thought of. So, on the normal review rating, that would be 2.5 stars. Would that be deserving of an oreo, or no?

September 15, 2009Album Review for the Week of September 15-21, 2009.
This Week: “Breakthrough” – Colbie Caillat 1. “I Won’t” -The lyrics themselves sound almost possessive/obsessive. The music sounds country more than anything else. The vocals are good though. 2. “Begin Again” -Beginning music sounds like something that would be written by Saving Jane. The lyrics are confusing to say the least. At one part, it sounds like they’ve broken up, at another, it sounds like theyre working on it. 3. “You Got Me” -One of the better songs on the album. The lyrics are simple and to the point. She even uses one metaphor throughout the whole song, which is unlike most songs anymore that uses metaphor. 4. “Fallin’ For You” -Very simple. Very Relatable. Very Country. But quite enjoyable. 5. “Rainbow” -this is the type of song that you would write “EPIC FAIL” on the lyrics because it is a failed attempt at an up-beat song. The music is bad, the lyrics are too emo for the music. The only good thing about this song was the vocals. This song shouldve been left on the cutting room floor. 6. “Droplets”[ft Jason Reeves] -The vocals from both parties are amazing and match the lyrics/music perfectly. The only thing I don’t like is how they both sound like theyre talking to different third parties. Its as if there was no chemistry within the song. 7. “I Never Told You” -Its not often that a song can make me cry because of what it says and how much it means to me on a personal level, but this song did it. It’s a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics and music and vocals. But I don’t suggest listening to it if you don’t want to cry because it may do that to you. 8. “Fearless” -This is quite possibly the best song on the entire album. The piano throughout it brings the softness of the song to the surface. Music is great, vocals are great, lyrics are amazing, and its very relatable. 9. “Runnin’ Around” -This song sounds like the love child of Michelle Branch circa 2003 and Gwen Stefani’s “sweet escape”. Those two should never be mixed. I cant say that there is a single thing about this song that I like. 10. “Break Through” -Im not sure how to describe this song other than it made my ears bleed. The music was bad, the lyrics were that much worse. The vocals were just bad. 11. “It Stops Today” -Its okay, but it could’ve been better. The lyrics sound like shes falling for someone and she doesn’t want to, but she knows that she has to. The piano’s a nice touch, but it didn’t do anything for the song. 12. “Lucky” [ft Jason Mraz] -Very cute, but not that great. I didn’t like the music or the lyrics in most parts. However, the vocals were pretty good and the male touch was good. Overall, this album was a huge disappointment. I was expecting and hoping for something id be able to listen to over and over again, but this is definitely not that. Although some songs were amazing, most just didn’t make any sense.

September 8, 2009Album Review for the Week of September 8-14This Week:
"Don't Fear The Reaper" - Witchery
1. "Disturbing the Beast"
-Probably the best instrumental I've heard in...forever.
The percussion and strings aren't doing the same thing, but it doesn't sound like each are playing different songs.
2. "Stigmatized"
-The vocals are clearer than what I expected and the music is well written.
The only problem that I had with this song was some of the lyrics are hard to make out.
Like, you can tell he's saying something, but you can't tell what it is.
3. "Draw Blood"
-the guitar/bass [whichever it is] and the drums are too blended in this song.
I didn't like it as much as the first two and I think that it should've been faster, but its still a really good song.
4. "The Ritual"
-Starts with guitar/bass, which is different from the other three, which started off with drums.
The tempo was good. The music was good. The vocals aren't really clear, but I still liked it a lot.
5. "Ashes"
-it honestly reminds me of something Dimmu Borgir would write
[and yeah, if I spell that wrong, the bestie will shoot me in the face].
The combination of instruments in the beginning and throughout the song is just amazing.
The vocals are clear-ish and the tempo is just right.
6. "Plague Rider"
-I can't say that I like this song very much.
I think that the music itself isn't the best, the vocals are very unclear and the lyrics are hard to hear.
7. "Damned in Hell"
-all of the components of the music itself go well together.
However, the vocals aren't very clear at parts and the lyrics are undistinguishable in places.
8. "Crossfixation"
-Vocals are clearer, but not crystal.
However, there is a really good drum/guitar balance,
meaning one doesn't over power the other.
9. "The Wait of the Pyramids"
-the beginning is fucking sex.
Like, for serious. I don't even know how to describe it any better than that.
Hell. This song is fucking sex.
10. "Immortal Death"
-The fading in at the beginning of the song is amazing.
I love the music itself, but I don't like how the drums do the dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun
thing the whole time.
11. "Styx"
-Love the combination of instruments in the beginning.
The vocals are much clearer and absolutely amazing.
The lyrics are distinguishable and go well with the vocals and music.
12. "War Piece"
-Amazing beginning. Love the snare drum war music stuffies,
then how it meets with the guitar and regular drums. Absolutely genius.
13. "Cannonfodder"
-Music is very good, but not great.
The vocals are clearer, but definitely not crystal.
It's very short though, but very good.
Overall, "Don't Fear the Reaper" is an amazing album.
I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is already into metal or anyone
who is just getting into it/rediscovering it. Think of it as a Black Metal vocalist
with Thrash Metal music. However, I definitely don't recommend this to anyone
who is more into the all time low/boys like girls thing. It may cause a heart attack.
-xo.
[edited by the same bestie that would
shoot me in the face if i spell dimmu borgir wrong]

September 1, 2009Album review for the week of September 1-7, 2009This week: "Relativity" - Emarosa If you turn on an album and within the first 3 seconds of the song, it sounds like the singer is almost screaming at you, it will be one of three things. It will either be a] quite scary, b] the beginning of something amazing, or c] some metal album. Relativity would be option b. Now, you may listen to it and think to yourself "hey, this sounds like dance gavin dance. Did I label it wrong on my itunes?" the answer is no. no you didn't. I know, because I thought the same thing. The vocalist is the same though. With this album, theres a good balance among all three components of a song; the vocals, the music, and the lyrics. You aren't sitting there, listening to this album, and thinking to yourself "hey, I cant hear this kid." Or "where's the music?" or "what the hell is he saying?". Also, you can tell by going from song to song to song that it's the same artist without each song sounding just like the previous and just like the next. In my opinion, this album is amazing. Absolutely amazing. And I truly think that those who liked Downtown Battle Mountain by Dance Gavin Dance but aren't a big fan of screamo will adore this album.
xo.
